Summer Activities in VHCS

While our students are enjoying summer fun, June continued to be an active month throughout Vestavia Hills City Schools. Teachers and staff used the month to sharpen their craft and prepare for the year ahead. Elementary and middle school teachers attended professional development sessions focused on social studies instruction, while our technology staff attended professional development to support classroom technology needs. Support staff completed CPR training and certification, reinforcing our commitment to student and staff safety district-wide. Our administrative team also met in early June to plan for the 2026-27 school year and strengthen leadership capacity across our schools — work that will pay dividends as students return in the fall.

At Vestavia Hills High School, summer school and athletics camps kept the campus active, giving students academic support and a head start on fall sports. Younger students had their own summer adventures through STEM Camp and Summer Reading Camp. STEM Camp blended creativity and problem-solving as students built roller coasters and mini putt-putt courses, explored cybersecurity and drone coding, and even constructed prosthetic legs and robotic hands — projects that paired innovation with character.

From professional development to playgrounds, June reflected the same purpose that drives us all year: preparing our people and our students for what’s next. We can’t wait to welcome you back for the 2026-27 school year!

Board of Education Updates - June 2026

The Vestavia Hills Board of Education met on Monday, June 29. The meeting opened with recognition of the Vestavia Hills High School Speech and Debate Team, which earned a Debate School of Excellence Award at a national competition earlier this month.

Board members then turned to a full agenda of approvals for the 2026-27 school year. They adopted the new Parent-Student Handbook, now posted at vhcs.us/handbook, along with next year’s school fees and employee supplement schedules. On the nutrition side, the Board approved a 50-cent increase to breakfast and lunch pricing — our first such increase in a decade — and signed off on new bids for Child Nutrition Program food products and kitchen supplies.

Several personnel items were approved including a contract renewal for Buddy Anderson in his role as Dean of Students, and a reclassification of the Nurse Administrator position to Director of Health Services. The Board also handled routine monthly business — personnel actions, field trips, and the disposal of outdated property.

On the facilities side, the Board approved a change order on the Vestavia Hills High School parking lot project that returned more than $50,000 to the school system, plus a new contract for bathroom improvements at the VHHS Softball Field. Rounding out the meeting, the Board approved a partnership with Baptist Health Sports for athletic training services and a trademark licensing agreement with a local vendor, in addition to the school system’s regular financial statements.

To close the meeting, the Board reviewed its annual evaluation results for Superintendent Todd Freeman and Chief School Finance Officer Courtney Brown. Both Freeman and Brown were ranked by their respective stakeholder groups as “accomplished” and “proficient” in their roles, according to evaluation data provided by the Alabama Association of School Boards.
